Monsoon Delay in Telangana: IMD Forecast Predicts June Arrival
The southwest monsoon is forecasted to arrive in Telangana post-June 5 due to El Niño influences, causing heatwaves and potential water scarcity issues for agriculture. The delayed arrival will impact crop yields and general livelihoods.

Highlights
- •Monsoon expected after June 5 in Telangana
- •Severe heatwave conditions with temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius
- •Eleven districts recorded maximum temperatures over 46 degrees
- •IMD issued red alerts for four districts due to extreme weather
The southwest monsoon is set to arrive in the state of Telangana after June 5, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts. This delay comes amid concerns over the El Niño phenomenon's impact on weather patterns across South Asia.
Usually, monsoons begin their journey through this region by early June; however, due to the influence of El Niño, they are anticipated to linger until mid-June at the earliest. Temperatures in Telangana have soared above 45 degrees Celsius recently. On Monday, Vemulapalli mandal of Nalgonda district recorded a scorching temperature of 46.5 degrees Celsius.
Thirteen districts of Telangana experienced maximum temperatures exceeding 46 degrees this week, while six more witnessed temperatures reaching 45.8 degrees. The IMD has issued a red alert for four districts due to these extreme heat conditions, warning residents and authorities about the potential impacts on agriculture and public health.
Poor Rainfall Predicted: Implications for Agriculture
The delayed monsoon along with potentially reduced rainfall raises significant concerns about crop productivity in Telangana. Farmers and local communities are closely monitoring weather patterns and preparing for a challenging planting season ahead.
Experts predict that the less-than-expected precipitation could lead to water stress, affecting not just agriculture but also impacting water availability for other essential services like domestic use and industry. The state's economy, heavily reliant on agriculture, is likely to face considerable pressures if this scenario unfolds as anticipated.
