The central government of India has taken a significant step in ensuring internet access reaches every nook and corner of the nation. On Tuesday, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced several upgrades to the public Wi-Fi initiative, PM-WANI, aiming to simplify and secure internet usage nationwide.
Enhanced User Experience with QR-Code Connectivity
The new system will allow users to connect to public Wi-Fi simply by scanning a QR code, eliminating the previous cumbersome login process. This upgrade is designed to be both quick and secure, making it user-friendly for students, travelers, and small businesses.
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Minister of State Pemmasani Chandrashekhar have overseen the modifications. They have introduced plans with varying lengths - 15, 30, and 60 minutes, ensuring affordability for all users. These Internet access hotspots will be available in key locations such as bus terminals, railway stations, malls, and other transit hubs.
Updates to Protect Users from Scams
To protect the public from cyber fraud and counterfeit networks posing as public Wi-Fi, a significant change has been made. Official hotspots will now feature the PMWANI brand for easy identification by users. All operators within the PM WANI framework have eight weeks to adopt these new guidelines.
This means that by July 2026, the entire system will be functional nationwide, providing a more advanced and secure public Wi-Fi service across key locations in India. The initiative is set to benefit millions of citizens looking for reliable internet access wherever they are going.
