In a move aimed at enhancing the ease of doing business and improving accessibility, the Delhi government has unveiled plans to implement a digital currency known as the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) or 'Digital Rupee' for ration distribution. This initiative seeks to streamline subsidy processes, reduce queueing times for ration card holders, and ensure transparency in transactions.

The Digital Rupee will be credited directly into the unique identification linked digital wallets of those eligible under the ration scheme. Minster Manjinder Singh Sirsa highlighted that this transition would not only expedite the distribution process but also significantly reduce operational inefficiencies at Fair Price Shops (FPS).

Enhanced Accessibility & Transparency

The minister emphasized, 'With the introduction of CBDC, the ration distribution system will become much more convenient. Beneficiaries can use this digital rupee to purchase their required rations from FPSs.' This innovative approach ensures a direct and secure transfer of funds.

To further expand eligibility criteria, the annual income ceiling for those qualifying under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) scheme has been raised to ₹2.5 lakh. This decision was made during today's Cabinet meeting with the goal of benefitting more families financially.

The introduction of this digital currency comes as part of a broader initiative by the Delhi government aimed at leveraging technology for better public service delivery. Beneficiaries can look forward to receiving their ration subsidies directly on their mobile phones, streamlining both the distribution and usage processes.
