Indira Lankesh, Mother of Slain Journalist Gauri Lankesh, Passes Away in Bengaluru

Indira Lankesh, a respected author and entrepreneur, has passed away at her Bengaluru residence. Family members confirmed that she died in her sleep on Monday, following a reported heart attack. She had been receiving care for age-related health conditions prior to her passing.

As the wife of the late visionary journalist, poet, and editor P. Lankesh—the founder of the influential Kannada publication Lankesh Patrike—she was a central figure in a prominent literary family. She was also the mother of the courageous journalist Gauri Lankesh, whose life was tragically cut short when she was shot by assailants at her home in September 2017. The loss of her daughter remained a deeply traumatic event from which, according to close associates, she never fully recovered.

Legacy of a Resilient Matriarch

Indira Lankesh is survived by her daughter, the filmmaker Kavitha Lankesh, with whom she was residing in Uttarahalli at the time of her death, and her son, Indrajith Lankesh, also a noted filmmaker. During the early stages of their family life, when P. Lankesh left his academic position as a professor to dedicate his life to film and publishing, Indira Lankesh became the family's bedrock. She actively contributed to the household finances by selling sarees from her home before eventually establishing her own boutique, Mayur Silks, located in Gandhi Nagar, Bengaluru.

Beyond her entrepreneurial spirit, she was a writer in her own right. Her work, most notably the autobiographical novel Hulimavu Mattu Naanu, offered a poignant exploration of the personal conflicts, memories, and experiences that shaped her life. Her dedication extended to supporting her husband’s various literary and cinematic achievements, as well as taking on significant responsibilities in book publishing.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, recalling his long-standing and close association with the family. He noted that Indira Lankesh had remained deeply affected by the tragic murder of her daughter, Gauri Lankesh. Siddaramaiah emphasized that her immense contribution was reflected in the unwavering encouragement she provided to her husband's multifaceted career. Public figures such as activist Teesta Setalvad and actor Prakash Raj also paid their respects, highlighting her resilience and the enduring strength she maintained throughout her life despite personal tragedies.
