Gujarat Faces Severe Weather Crisis as Heavy Rainfall Triggers Red Alerts Nationwide

Gujarat is experiencing extreme weather conditions with widespread heavy rainfall causing severe flooding, infrastructure damage, and transport disruptions. Red alerts are in effect for South Gujarat, and authorities are actively managing emergency rescue operations while monitoring rising water levels across major rivers and dams.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

1 MIN READ
Important summary points from this article
  • Red alert issued for South Gujarat districts including Surat, Navsari, and Valsad due to extreme rainfall.
  • Historic Doswada Weir Dam in Tapi overflows, placing 17 downstream villages on high alert.
  • Emergency services successfully rescued eight people trapped in floodwaters in the Amreli district.
  • Severe weather has led to massive rail network disruptions, including train cancellations and route diversions.

The state of Gujarat is currently facing a severe weather crisis as multiple powerful meteorological systems remain active, triggering widespread heavy rainfall across the region. Over the past 24 hours, over 225 sub-districts have recorded significant precipitation. Local administrative authorities have issued urgent alerts as persistent downpours continue to disrupt normal life, affecting transport networks and submerging low-lying residential areas.

In South Gujarat, the situation remains critical. Regions such as Surat, Navsari, and Valsad have been placed under a red alert, with forecasts suggesting extreme rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm. Many underpasses and causeways in Navsari have become impassable, forcing the closure of at least 26 primary roads and severely impacting local connectivity. In the Tapi district, the historic Doswada Weir Dam has overflowed, prompting an emergency high-alert for 17 downstream villages.

Severe Weather Impact and Emergency Responses

The impact of this ongoing weather event extends across Saurashtra and other districts. In Amreli, emergency teams conducted a high-stakes rescue operation after a truck became trapped in the overflowing Meraman River. Thanks to the swift intervention of local police and community leaders, all eight individuals were safely extracted. Meanwhile, Narmada district has seen severe flooding in areas like Sagbara and Chikda, where river overflows have breached homes, causing significant property damage.

The regional transport network has also faced significant disruptions. In Palghar, waterlogging on railway tracks led to the cancellation of 16 trains and the diversion of 13 others, impacting commuters traveling on the busy rail routes connecting to nearby metropolitan hubs. Although the intense weather is expected to begin subsiding by July 8, current conditions demand extreme caution.

Residents are strictly advised to avoid unnecessary travel during this period. Local authorities are continuously monitoring the weather situation, especially in flood-prone zones, and have implemented emergency measures to support those in affected communities. Marine activities remain suspended as strong, gusty winds reaching 50 km/h are expected to continue sweeping through coastal regions of Saurashtra and Kutch. Meteorological experts continue to track the low-pressure system moving across central India to provide timely updates to the public.
