The Kerala government has officially announced a significant transition in its top-level administration, naming Bishwanath Sinha as the state’s next Chief Secretary. The decision was reached during a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister V D Satheesan in Thiruvananthapuram. This appointment marks a pivotal change in the state's bureaucratic leadership.
Bishwanath Sinha, a seasoned IAS officer from the 1992 batch, is slated to assume his new responsibilities upon the retirement of the current Chief Secretary, A Jayathilak, on June 30. Sinha brings extensive experience to the role, having served as the additional chief secretary in the Home Department since June 28, 2023. Throughout his distinguished career spanning over three decades, he has occupied various influential roles within both state and central administrative frameworks, including tenures as principal secretary, joint secretary, and resident commissioner.
Administrative Overhaul and Appointments
Alongside this major leadership change, the state cabinet finalized several other high-profile appointments aimed at streamlining governmental functions. The government has recommended retired district judge N Seshadrinath for the role of State Election Commissioner. Furthermore, N Anilkumar has been selected as the Special Government Pleader for the Lokayukta. The cabinet also approved a wider legal appointments package, authorizing four Special Government Pleaders, 12 Senior Government Pleaders, and 24 Government Pleaders to represent the state in the Kerala High Court.
Commitment to Social Relief
In addition to these administrative developments, the cabinet focused on delivering vital humanitarian assistance to families impacted by recent hardships. Officials sanctioned financial aid of Rs 5 lakh each from the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund to support the families of three Kudumbashree workers. These individuals tragically lost their lives due to a wall collapse at the Shivajinagar Hospital building in Bengaluru this past April.
Furthermore, the government extended financial support of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of three people killed in a fatal road accident at Neeleswaram in Kottarakkara. Demonstrating a commitment to public welfare, the administration also pledged to cover the full medical treatment costs for all individuals injured in the Neeleswaram incident. These measures underscore the government's dual focus on maintaining administrative efficiency while actively addressing the welfare needs of its citizens.
