The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has unveiled a major initiative to enhance urban mobility by introducing 100 new electric buses in Visakhapatnam. This project marks a significant step toward sustainable public transport and cleaner air quality in the region, focusing on modernizing the current fleet to better serve commuters.
According to APSRTC regional manager B. Appalanaidu, the rollout of these eco-friendly vehicles will occur in a phased approach. The first batch, consisting of 20 electric buses, is scheduled for deployment in June. These initial vehicles will be specifically utilized to establish connectivity routes to the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport. The remaining 80 units are slated to be integrated into the existing transport network throughout July and August, significantly expanding the reach of green transit options.
Infrastructure and Deployment Plans for Vizag
To support the operation of these 100 electric buses, the corporation is finalizing necessary logistical support. The deployment plan involves distributing 50 buses each to the Gajuwaka and Simhachalam depots. These locations are currently undergoing essential infrastructure upgrades, which include the installation of dedicated charging stations required to keep the electric fleet operational and efficient.
Venkata Ramana, the chief engineer for APSRTC, has been overseeing the site preparations. He conducted inspections alongside engineers from the private firms involved in the project to ensure that all charging facilities and operational hubs meet the required standards for seamless service launch.
Furthermore, the APSRTC management is emphasizing the human element of this transition. At the Simhachalam depot, regional management has issued clear directives to all staff, including drivers and operational personnel. The focus is on promoting a culture of road safety, minimizing traffic incidents, and maintaining high standards of professional conduct. By ensuring drivers are well-trained and that staff members remain courteous toward passengers, the corporation aims to significantly elevate the quality of public transport services across the district. As the electric buses hit the roads, they are expected to reduce carbon emissions while providing a reliable and modern travel experience for the residents of Visakhapatnam.
