Highlights

  • TGSPDCL has initiated a comprehensive monsoon safety drive to minimize power outages.
  • Staff are mandated to conduct regular field inspections under the 'Walk Along the Line' program.
  • Maintenance activities include tree-trimming and upgrades to transformers and poles across CURE zones.
  • Utility workers are being equipped with specialized safety gear and modern maintenance tools.

The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) has officially launched an extensive monsoon safety drive designed to reinforce the regional power infrastructure. This proactive measure aims to bolster the electricity distribution network, ultimately minimizing service interruptions and power outages during the challenging rainy season.

Enhancing Power Infrastructure and Field Inspections

Jitesh V. Patil, the Chairman and Managing Director of TGSPDCL, recently emphasized the critical need for heightened system reliability during a teleconference with senior department officials. Under the new monsoon safety drive, the company has mandated a rigorous schedule for field inspections. Every employee, ranging from the artisan level to senior staff, is now required to conduct onsite evaluations between the 10th and 20th of each month, specifically between 9 am and 10 am.

A primary component of this initiative is the “Walk Along the Line” program. This requires utility staff to physically traverse and inspect electrical lines within their designated jurisdictions. The goal is to proactively identify potential hazards, such as loose or sagging conductors or damaged infrastructure, and initiate immediate corrective measures. Alongside this, the “Poles & Lines Special Drive” focuses on a thorough examination of 33 kV substations, 11 kV feeders, and various distribution transformers across the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) zones.

To maintain high standards of accountability, all maintenance work must be logged systematically using GIS coordinates and documented with before-and-after photographs. Furthermore, the company is undertaking a two-week specialized tree-trimming program to clear vegetation from high-risk feeders, ensuring that foliage does not compromise overhead power lines during heavy rains.

Safety Equipment and Consumer Engagement

To support these efforts and ensure the protection of field personnel, TGSPDCL is currently procuring advanced maintenance equipment. This includes bucket-lift cranes, chain saws, pole pruners, specialized helmets, high-intensity torch lights, voltage detectors, raincoats, and new field uniforms. By equipping staff with these modern tools, the utility aims to improve both efficiency and overall safety during emergency repair operations.

Public awareness remains a cornerstone of the monsoon safety drive. The utility is rolling out a comprehensive communication campaign to educate citizens on electrical safety. Residents are encouraged to utilize established service channels for reporting issues, such as the 1912 helpline, the official TGSPDCL WhatsApp number, and the company’s mobile application. Additionally, safety advisory notices and informational boards are being installed in schools, parks, and other prominent public spaces to ensure community awareness throughout the monsoon period.
