Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has formally requested that Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh prioritize the transformation of the Adilabad airport into a comprehensive, multi-functional aviation MRO hub. During a strategic meeting held in New Delhi, the Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of integrating diverse operational capabilities at the location to maximize its potential for the state and the nation.
The proposal for the Adilabad airport includes provisions for advanced cargo handling services, extensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, and large-scale hangar operations. These features would complement the already planned Indian Air Force terminal and the proposed civilian passenger terminal, creating a robust infrastructure base that serves both defense and commercial interests.
Strategic Importance of the Proposed Aviation MRO Hub
A. Revanth Reddy noted that international aviation players are actively searching for suitable sites to host hangar facilities, a shift largely driven by recent geopolitical transformations across Central Asia. By establishing a dedicated aviation MRO hub, Telangana aims to capture this growing demand, thereby attracting significant private investment and drawing international carriers to the region.
The Chief Minister assured the Defence Minister that the state government is fully committed to facilitating the project. This commitment includes expediting necessary land acquisition, managing utility relocations, and streamlining all administrative procedures required to ensure the timely execution of this infrastructure development. He highlighted that this expansion is a top priority for the state, emphasizing its role in strengthening national integrity, improving regional connectivity, and enhancing overall defense preparedness.
Beyond the aviation plans, the meeting also addressed other significant collaborative efforts. A. Revanth Reddy expressed his appreciation for the recent transfer of defense land to the state for the construction of the Gandhi Sarovar project at Bapu Ghat, Langar Houz. This project is a central component of the broader Musi rejuvenation initiative in Hyderabad, which is expected to significantly improve public amenities.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister urged the Union government to accelerate the approval process for a key DRDO/DRDL project situated in Devarakadra, Mahabubnagar district. This site has been identified for a specialized defense research and testing facility, which is deemed critical for both local industrial development and national security enhancements. Key state officials, including R&B special secretary Vikas Raj, principal secretary K.S. Sreenivasa Raju, and Chief Minister’s secretary Manicka Raj, were in attendance to support these discussions.
