A controversial situation unfolded recently as security forces employed tear gas shells to disperse protesters blocking National Highway 202 in Ukhrul, Manipur. The incident occurred amidst heightened tension following the alleged abduction of 14 Kuki community members by Naga groups.

According to sources, at least five women received minor injuries during the operation but were treated on-site. The protesters, represented by Kuki Inpi Manipur—an apex body for Kuki tribes in the state—have called for an indefinite shutdown of Kuki-inhabited areas.

Tensions Rekindled

Hostilities began in May when over 38 people, including three church leaders, were abducted and held hostage by unknown assailants. Six individuals remain missing, underscoring the ongoing uncertainty of their safety.

The situation escalated further this time, as security forces had to intervene on Friday, utilizing tear gas shells to manage the unruly crowd obstructing key routes between Imphal and Ukhrul districts with boulders and tree trunks. The blockage significantly hampered essential goods transport and movement of personnel.

Kuki Inpi Manipur asserts that 14 members of the Kuki community are still held captive by Naga groups, despite partial freedom having been granted to 31 hostages.

A significant development came when a team of Supreme Court Judges led by Justice B R Gavai visited Churachandpur. They inaugurated legal services camps and engaged in welfare initiatives aimed at indifferently displaced persons (IDPs).
