Regional transportation options in Ontario have officially expanded with the launch of new, permanent GO transit services connecting Toronto and the picturesque city of Stratford. This initiative, which commenced operations on July 6, aims to improve accessibility for commuters, students, and tourists alike by providing a direct, car-free travel link to a destination celebrated for its rich theatrical history and riverside scenery.

Expanded Travel Connectivity with GO transit

The new year-round GO transit service operates daily, with a schedule structured to meet diverse travel needs. On weekdays, the service is primarily tailored for commuters, featuring a morning departure from Stratford to Union Station and a corresponding return trip in the late afternoon. Weekend schedules are designed to support leisure travel, allowing visitors from the Greater Toronto Area to enjoy day trips to the riverside city, with convenient morning departures from Toronto and evening returns.

The route travels along the Kitchener GO Line, incorporating several key stops including Kitchener, Guelph, Acton, Georgetown, Mount Pleasant, Brampton, and Bramalea. For weekend travellers, the route also includes a stop at Bloor GO station. This expansion follows the conclusion of a two-year pilot project that previously connected London and Toronto via Stratford, which was eventually discontinued due to lower ridership levels. Local officials, including Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma, have expressed optimism that this permanent service will be a vital asset for the region, provided that it receives consistent usage from the public.

Travelers should note that the ticketing process for Stratford differs from typical stations within the network. PRESTO cards are not currently supported at this location, and paper tickets are not available for purchase at local vending machines. Passengers are required to secure their tickets online before travel. For those planning a weekend excursion, GO Transit offers a $10 One-Day Weekend Pass, providing an affordable flat rate for unlimited travel throughout the day. Standard one-way tickets between Union Station and Stratford are priced at $25 per person, with children under the age of 12 eligible to ride for free. As the service is now permanent, authorities encourage passengers to stay informed by listening to station announcements and positioning themselves correctly on platforms, particularly near accessibility ramps.
