Recent flooding in Kaikōura led to a state of emergency and widespread road closures following intense rainfall.

Air New Zealand has officially issued a travel advisory as severe weather conditions continue to impact flight schedules across the country. Passengers heading out for the long weekend are being cautioned that they may experience significant delays or cancellations due to the volatile climate currently affecting several regions.

The primary focus of these operational challenges is currently Wellington, where high winds and heavy rainfall have caused disruptions to air travel. Air New Zealand has indicated that while the immediate impact is concentrated on flights arriving at and departing from the capital, the situation remains fluid and subject to change. Travelers are encouraged to monitor their flight status closely, with at least one passenger already provided the option to shift to an alternative booking for a mid-afternoon departure.

Widespread Weather Disruptions Across New Zealand

The current weather event is part of a broader pattern of winter storms that have moved northwards across the country over the past several days. Meteorological services have issued various warnings, including orange heavy rain alerts for the Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, and the eastern ranges of the North Island. Furthermore, a heavy snow watch has been implemented for inland Otago and southern Canterbury.

The impact of this severe weather has already been significant in the upper South Island. Earlier this week, a state of emergency was declared in Kaikōura after intense rainfall—estimated at nearly 200mm within a 24-hour period—resulted in widespread flooding. The heavy downpour caused riverbanks to burst and necessitated the evacuation of hundreds of residents, alongside the closure of numerous roads throughout the region.

The ongoing instability in the weather is expected to bring severe gale-force gusts to exposed areas, including the Marlborough Sounds, Kāpiti Coast, and Taranaki. Authorities are warning residents and travelers alike to remain vigilant, as these conditions pose a risk of damage to essential infrastructure, including powerlines and unsecured structures. As Air New Zealand continues to manage the situation, passengers are advised to stay updated through official airline channels and local weather reports as they plan their holiday travel.
