Madhya Pradesh urban development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has publicly addressed a noticeable trend among government officials, suggesting that many have recently started displaying an affinity for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) following the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assuming power in the state. This shift in the behavior of bureaucrats has become a subject of discussion within political circles.
Observations on the Growing Affiliation with the RSS
Speaking at a memorial gathering held in Bhopal to honor a former RSS pracharak (ideologue), Mr. Vijayvargiya shared personal anecdotes regarding his interactions with administrative officers. He highlighted a competitive atmosphere among officials who now seem eager to emphasize their connections to the Sangh. The minister noted that various officers frequently approach him to recount their past visits to local shakhas, such as referencing their time spent in Shajapur at the shakha of Makhan Singh.
Mr. Vijayvargiya recounted that he often challenges these officials, asking them whether they continue to attend these gatherings. He also reminds them that these affiliations were never highlighted or mentioned by the same individuals during periods when the BJP was not in government. According to the minister, the tendency for officers to align themselves with the RSS ideology has surged significantly since the change in administration.
The minister further detailed instances where officials go to great lengths to establish their ties, sometimes even mentioning the involvement of their family members. He pointed to one specific example where an officer claimed their father held the position of president at a shakha, despite the fact that such a formal designation does not exist within the organization's structure.
Reflecting on Ideological Values
While discussing the expansion of the organization, Mr. Vijayvargiya expressed concerns about the dilution of genuine commitment. Referencing individuals like the late pracharak Shaligram Tomar, he argued that such dedicated figures are becoming increasingly uncommon. He emphasized that the growth of the organization and its ideology should not be accompanied by a decline in the caliber of individuals involved.
The minister concluded that the current situation, marked by large numbers of people associating with the RSS, requires careful reflection. He questioned the ultimate value of the ideology if it fails to cultivate quality individuals, suggesting that there is a critical need to prioritize the integrity of the people involved over mere numerical expansion. This commentary highlights the ongoing discourse surrounding political influence on bureaucratic behavior in Madhya Pradesh.
