During a recent outreach session at the G7 summit held in France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced a visionary proposal aimed at revolutionizing international infrastructure and commerce. He advocated for the creation of the IMPACT framework, designed to boost global connectivity and trade by leveraging the collective strengths of G7 nations, India, and countries across the Global South.
The proposed International Mobilisation Partnership for Accelerating Connectivity and Trade (IMPACT) is envisioned as a strategic initiative that would synthesize G7 capital investment, India's extensive talent pool, and the inherent ownership of Global South nations. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that this partnership could be structured similarly to the ambitious India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which was previously announced on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi in 2023.
Expanding Global Connectivity and Talent Synergy
The IMEC initiative was originally conceived as a transformative network of roads, railroads, and shipping routes to better integrate Asia, the Middle East, and the West. While that project has faced delays due to regional instability, the new IMPACT proposal seeks to extend that collaborative spirit further. Modi posed a critical question to global leaders, asking whether such connectivity projects could be successfully extended to regions like Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific Islands.
Beyond infrastructure, the session highlighted a significant demographic advantage held by the Global South. Modi pointed out that while many developed societies are currently grappling with aging populations, India and other nations in the Global South are rich in young talent, entrepreneurship, and specialized skills. He proposed the establishment of a Global Skills Partnership to facilitate effective skill mapping and promote trusted skilled mobility between these regions.
The discussion, titled 'Reviving a Balanced, Shared and Sustainable Economic Growth for All,' served as a platform for Prime Minister Modi to redefine the metrics of global success. He argued that the current focus on GDP and raw trade figures is insufficient. Instead, he maintained that the fundamental questions for international economic policy should center on the beneficiaries of growth, the nature of the partnerships involved, and the long-term direction of global development.
This engagement occurred during Modi's visit to the French commune of Evian-les-Bains, following his official tour of Slovakia. By participating as a guest at the G7 forum, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, India continues to reinforce its role as a key voice for developing economies on the world stage.
