Highlights

  • India Acquires Fourth S-400 Squadron
  • New System Strengthens Air Defence Capabilities
  • Part of $5 Billion Deal Signed in 2018
  • Expected Additional Five Squadrons Soon

NEW DELHI: India has just welcomed the fourth squadron of the sophisticated S-400 surface-to-air missile defence system, enhancing its air defence capabilities. The system arrived by sea a few days ago and will be deployed at a strategic location by the Indian Air Force. The fifth squadron is slated for delivery in the coming months.

The procurement deal for five S-400 units was signed back in October 2018, valued at $5 billion, of which three have already been delivered. The remaining two were delayed due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, following a commendable performance during Operation Sindoor, it has been decided that another five squadrons would be acquired.

Operational Capabilities and Implications

The S-400 boasts impressive detection capabilities and deployability. Equipped with missiles capable of covering ranges from 60 to 40 kilometers, the system can detect targets up to 600 kilometers away. Recently, tensions in West Asia have underscored the growing importance of such advanced air defence systems.

India's Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, recently approved the additional purchase due to strategic needs and performance validation. The S-400 is a significant upgrade from earlier models like the S-300, offering extensive range and versatility in combat scenarios.

Russian personnel have already undergone training programs to ensure smooth operation alongside Indian military staff. This integrated approach ensures that India can make full use of the advanced system promptly after deliveries are complete.
