The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is set to establish an advanced forensic auditing lab at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Hyderabad. ICAI's President, Prasanna Kumar D, has announced that the new facility will facilitate small and medium-sized practitioner firms by offering assignment-specific tools.
Forensic Audit for Small Firms
With over five lakh members, including many small and medium practitioners, ICAI identifies a gap in forensic audit capabilities among these firms. The new lab will operate under a "pay and use" model, providing essential tools to practitioners without significant initial investment. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of supporting home-grown accounting practices that can compete on a global stage.
Kumar emphasizes that, while large auditing works often lack forensic audit skills, small and medium firms could excel in this area through better resources and training provided by the ICAI lab. The lab is expected to launch within the next 2-3 months at the CoE in Hyderabad, marking a significant step towards enhanced audit quality across the region.
In response to growing economic opportunities, the government aims to nurture larger local accounting firms that can contribute significantly to the national economy by competing with global players. The forensic lab initiative is viewed as a critical measure to bridge skill gaps and foster innovation within the sector.
