Chennai: Former leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, Anbamalai, has declared his intention to form a new political movement. His departure from the BJP follows the party's loss in the recent assembly elections on 4th December 2025. Annamalai announced that he will contest in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as part of this movement.
In his resignation letter, Anbamalai expressed gratitude to the BJP for its unwavering support but stated that differing viewpoints on Tamil Nadu were responsible for his decision. National President Nitin Nabin accepted Annamalai's resignation and informed him that he had previously expressed his intention to quit after the elections, thus ensuring a smooth transition.
Speculations about Anbamalai forming a new political party surged following the BJP's poor showing in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, where they managed only 3% of the vote share. His birthday celebrated with slogans like "Our Leader, Come and Lead Us" on key roads and streets in Coimbatore highlighted his influence in the region.
Anbamalai had significantly boosted the BJP's presence in Tamil Nadu during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by increasing their vote share to 11% from just 3%. However, despite this growth, the BJP was unable to secure any parliamentary seats for himself or his allies. He was later replaced in the state chief position by Nainar Nagendran.
