New Delhi: The TVK-led alliance has allocated its Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu to the Congress for the upcoming election scheduled on June 18, a significant development in the political landscape of India. According to various sources familiar with the situation, Praveen Chakravarthy, who heads the Congress data and analytics cell, is emerging as a strong contender for this nomination.

Chakravarthy had previously campaigned extensively for an alliance between TVK and the Congress prior to the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. After the polls concluded, he expressed that not aligning with TVK was a strategic misstep, recognizing the potential benefits of such partnerships in navigating complex political landscapes.

Alignment Dynamics Within Congress

However, Party sources reveal that senior leaders within the Congress preferred to maintain an alliance with the DMK. This decision was primarily driven by the DMK's long-standing loyalty as a key ally and its role as a significant player in the I.N.D.I.A. bloc—a strategic coalition aimed at fostering unity among opposition parties.

Interestingly, DMK president M.K. Stalin had earlier shown support for Rahul Gandhi's candidacy for Prime Minister from the opposition side. Nevertheless, this internal balancing act underscores the intricate maneuvers and negotiations that define political alliances in India.

The allocation of the Tamil Nadu Rajya Sabha seat ensures that Congress will retain its stronghold on the upper house legislative body, securing a total of seven seats—the most it has held since these elections began. These include three from Karnataka, one each from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand. This move not only bolsters political influence but also strengthens the party's presence across diverse Indian geographies.
