Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has embarked on a significant three-day journey to Mumbai and Delhi, with the ongoing Raidurg land dispute involving the State Bank of India (SBI) expected to take center stage during his discussions in the national capital. This trip, which began on Saturday, comes at a critical time as the legal battle between the state government and the nation’s largest lender intensifies.
Addressing the Raidurg Land Dispute
The core of the issue lies in a Raidurg land allotment dating back to 2010, when the former Andhra Pradesh government provided five acres to the State Bank of Hyderabad for office development. Despite the passage of 16 years, no construction occurred on the site. Consequently, the state government moved to cancel the allotment due to non-utilization, a decision that led to protracted litigation. Although officials have proposed alternative plots at Osmannagar and Gandipet to resolve the matter, the situation remains unresolved following SBI's continued legal challenges in the Telangana High Court.
During his visit, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is expected to meet with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Reports suggest he plans to express strong dissatisfaction regarding the actions of SBI Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty, alleging that the bank's recent stance is politically motivated and harmful to the state's reputation. Senior state officials accompanying the Chief Minister are also slated to address these concerns with RBI Chairman Sanjay Malhotra.
Infrastructure and Political Context
Beyond the banking row, Revanth Reddy is focused on regional infrastructure development. In Mumbai, he aimed to coordinate with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to facilitate the construction of the Tummidihatti barrage, a vital element of the Pranahita-Chevella lift irrigation project on the Godavari River. This project holds massive significance for the agricultural growth and water security of the region.
The state government contends that the cancellation of the original land allotment was procedural and consistent with regulations concerning unused land. Despite TGIIC conducting an e-auction on May 28, 2026, and issuing an allotment letter to the highest bidder, SBI has renewed its legal opposition. The Telangana High Court, having declined to grant an immediate stay on the government's auction, has scheduled the next hearing for June 22, setting the stage for high-stakes deliberations in Delhi.
