In a gesture highlighting the significance of tribal leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to Pahadpur village in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district on Saturday. The visit was dedicated to participating in the 68th birthday celebrations of President Droupadi Murmu at her ancestral residence. This event served as a focal point for discussing tribal empowerment and inclusive regional growth.
Accompanied by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and other notable officials, the Prime Minister took part in various cultural and social activities hosted at Jahira, the traditional Santhal community worship site. During the gathering, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled development projects valued at approximately Rs 47,000 crore, describing the trip as a profoundly emotional experience.
Infrastructure and Solar Power Initiatives
A major highlight of the event was the announcement that Pahadpur is set to be transformed into a model solar-powered village, or 'Suryagram,' as part of the broader national renewable energy mission. Under this initiative, every household will receive solar infrastructure, providing free electricity while allowing residents to generate additional income by selling excess power back to the grid. This project is intended to act as a blueprint for sustainable development in remote and tribal areas across India.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister underscored the central government’s commitment to tribal welfare and educational advancement. He noted that nearly 500 Ekalavya Model Residential Schools are currently operational, with plans for an additional 750 institutions already approved. These schools aim to provide children in tribal communities with educational opportunities that are equivalent to those found in urban centers.
Economic Growth and Regional Development
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the administration of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for its focus on people-centric governance. He remarked on Odisha's rapid progress, noting the state's success in attracting significant investment through the Utkarsh Odisha initiative. Reports indicate that the state has secured investment commitments totaling nearly Rs 20 lakh crore, with mega projects worth Rs 3.5 lakh crore currently underway.
In response to the visit, President Droupadi Murmu expressed her deep gratitude for the Prime Minister's presence in her native village. She praised his dedication to the welfare of tribal communities nationwide. Additionally, the President highlighted the positive impact of the Subhadra Yojana, an Odisha government scheme that provides annual financial aid to eligible women, thereby bolstering their social security and economic independence.
The event concluded with an emphasis on continuing these welfare programs, which support farmers, youth, and marginalized groups, ensuring that development benefits reach the most vulnerable sections of society.
