B Manickam Tagore Appointed As The New Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has officially appointed B Manickam Tagore as its new president. This significant organizational shift, announced on Saturday, marks the conclusion of K Selvaperunthagai's tenure, who had been leading the state unit since February 2024. The move is widely viewed as a strategic maneuver by the national party to establish a more direct and cohesive relationship with the governing TVK administration.

Strategic Leadership Changes in Tamil Nadu Congress

The appointment of B Manickam Tagore, who currently serves as the Congress MP representing Virudhunagar, follows a decision finalized by the Congress President. K C Venugopal, serving as the General Secretary, confirmed the update, noting the party's formal appreciation for the previous efforts of K Selvaperunthagai. Despite these formalities, political analysts suggest that the internal party sentiment often positioned the former president as being more aligned with the DMK, whereas B Manickam Tagore is perceived to hold a distinct political perspective.

The leadership transition highlights the evolving political dynamics within the state. Prior to the recent Assembly elections, the Congress eventually ended its alliance with the DMK. B Manickam Tagore had notably been an outspoken critic of the DMK even before this formal split. Furthermore, he had consistently pushed for the party to demand a greater share in state power, a stance he shared with Praveen Chakravarty, who recently secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha with support from the TVK. Throughout the pre-election period, B Manickam Tagore also actively campaigned for a collaborative alliance between the Congress and the newly established TVK.

Revitalizing the Party Structure

The strategic shift reflects the party's broader attempt to recover from electoral setbacks. In the previous Assembly elections, the Congress contested as a partner within the DMK alliance across 27 seats, ultimately securing victories in only five constituencies. Following this disappointing performance, the party pivoted its strategy toward the TVK, a move that successfully resulted in the acquisition of two Ministerial berths.

Commenting on the new appointment, Praveen Chakravarty offered congratulations to B Manickam Tagore, emphasizing the monumental nature of the task ahead in rebuilding a robust Congress presence in Tamil Nadu. He expressed firm confidence that under this new leadership, the party would become a more responsive organization that prioritizes the concerns of its workers while effectively positioning itself as a legitimate voice for the people of the state. B Manickam Tagore brings substantial experience to this role, having previously served as the AICC-in-charge for Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar, along with his duties as a Congress whip in the Lok Sabha. He is currently serving his third consecutive term as a member of the Lok Sabha.
