In a proactive move to address the challenges of substance abuse, officials in Vijayawada have officially united to promote the goal of a drug-free society. This collaborative effort comes in anticipation of the upcoming International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, which is marked globally on June 26. As part of this initiative, stakeholders are working diligently to launch a comprehensive action plan aimed at fostering awareness and community engagement across the district.
The strategic planning session took place on Wednesday at the Eagle Cell office in Vijayawada. The meeting was conducted under the expert guidance of NTR district collector Dr G. Lakshmisha and Eagle IGP Aake Ravi Krishna. The proceedings were spearheaded by Phani Dhurjati, who serves as the member convener for the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan Saptah campaign. During the session, participants focused on finalizing a structured approach to implement this vital anti-drug campaign effectively.
Advancing the Drug-Free Society Agenda
A primary objective of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan Saptah is to mobilize different sectors of society to combat the menace of narcotics. Eagle inspector M. Ravindra presented a detailed roadmap during the meeting, emphasizing the necessity for extensive awareness programs throughout the district. These planned activities aim to inform the public, particularly the youth, about the devastating consequences associated with drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
To ensure widespread participation, the campaign will feature a series of events including large-scale rallies and educational workshops. Authorities are also planning to engage students through essay-writing competitions and theatrical performances in various educational institutions. Furthermore, special video screenings will be utilized to demonstrate the harmful effects of addiction, complemented by mass pledge-taking ceremonies designed to encourage a healthier, substance-free lifestyle.
Officials underscored that achieving a drug-free society requires a unified and synchronized effort. This involves active cooperation between government departments, educational establishments, healthcare providers, and various social welfare organizations. The presence of notable figures, including Dr Swarajya Lakshmi, Dr Gouri Shankar from the SIMS de-addiction centre, Navajeevan Balabhavan coordinator Shekhar, and social welfare representative Anil, highlighted the broad-based support for this cause. With the involvement of Eagle team members and SIs such as M. Veeranjaneyulu, P. Rambabu, and R. Sriramamurthy, the district is preparing to implement these measures with a clear focus on long-term sustainability and community health.
