New Delhi, India - In a recent discussion, former Indian cricketer and selector Saba Karim raised concerns about Suryakumar Yadav's current form and whether it justifies his continued inclusion in the T20 International side ahead of the 2028 World Cup.
While Yadav had showcased promising performances, including hitting a couple of half-centuries against New Zealand early this year and delivering a match-winning knock during the T20 World Cup opener against the USA, his recent form has been lackluster. During the IPL, he scored only 270 runs in 13 matches with an average strike rate of 147.54.
Suryakumar Yadav's Performance Analysis
'On current form, Suryakumar may not be a part of the selection committee's vision to move this team forward,' Karim said in an interview with PTI. 'We have seen similar shifts in the past, from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli leading to new selections for important tournaments like the T20 World Cup now.'
However, Yadav's performance has not been consistent even within major tournaments. This inconsistency raises questions about his ongoing selection for international T20 competitions.
Captaincy Contenders for India's T20 Team
Karim suggested several names as potential captains for the Indian T20 team, including Rajat Patidar, Shreyas Iyer, and Ishan Kishan. However, he does not believe that Hardik Pandya's leadership skills are currently meeting expectations.
Rajat Patidar, who has successfully led Royal Challengers Bangalore to consecutive IPL titles, is a strong contender despite his lack of international T20I experience. 'He has demonstrated the ability to lead an experienced and star-studded team with finesse and consistency,' said Karim.
