Bitterness is brewing among France's national team football stars following a controversial decision by the French Football Federation (FFF). According to reports, forwards Kylian Mbappe and Rayan Cherki have voiced their discontent over an image rights deal between FFF and Betclic, a sports-betting operator. The move has reignited tensions within the national squad.
Details from L'Equipe indicate that both players were upset because their images were used by Betclic for promotional purposes without their knowledge or consent during a team photograph at Clairefontaine training centre. Cherki and Mbappe claim they learned of this only after the advertisements had appeared, leading to an uneasy situation in the camp ahead of upcoming matches.
Discomfort Among Team Members
The dissatisfaction is not limited to MBape and Cherki; Desir Doue, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembele were also pictured in similar advertisements. The players contend that the FFF's communication regarding their usage was inadequate.
Both Mbappe and Cherki have made it clear that they are not opposed to Betclic as a betting company but feel let down by the way the federation handled the situation. Their primary grievance lies with the lack of informed consent rather than any financial or ethical concerns towards the sports industry.
"We were told we would be representing our nation and now, out of nowhere, our images are linked to a betting campaign," Cherki expressed his viewpoint. Mbappe echoed this sentiment, adding that transparency was key in such matters.
