Heightened anxiety has emerged among beneficiaries of the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Telangana, following the circulation of alarming social media messages regarding e-KYC verification. These rumors, which have triggered widespread panic, falsely link local ration card procedures to recent political developments in West Bengal, where the government canceled a significant number of ration cards during a special electoral roll revision.
Addressing Ration Card e-KYC Misinformation
The online misinformation campaign, fueled by various social media influencers, political entities, and even some local officials, has prompted families across Telangana to rush for biometric updates. Concerns grew after widely shared digital alerts, such as those circulated by individuals like Abid Tanveer, warned that failing to complete the e-KYC process this month could lead to an immediate cessation of food security benefits. Several AIMIM legislators, including Jaffar Hussain Meraj, have urged their constituents to finalize this verification by June 20, leading to the establishment of specialized help desks in regions like Mehdipatnam.
In response to the growing public unrest, Civil Supplies department officials have issued a firm clarification. Authorities have completely ruled out any immediate threat of ration card cancellation, assuring the public that the e-KYC portal remains open without any imposed deadlines. An official statement explained that the panic is unfounded and stems entirely from misinterpreted events occurring in West Bengal. The government is simply preparing systems for future distribution cycles, with officials expected to focus on ration management starting in July, following the distribution of a three-month quota in April.
Context of PDS Beneficiaries in Telangana
Data provided by RTI filings from Shashi Kumar of Yugantar highlights the scale of the state's PDS operations. Since the formation of Telangana, authorities have managed a complex system involving the cancellation of 4,11,306 cards and the issuance of 22,97,264 new ones. Notably, 16,26,255 of these cards were issued under the current Congress-led government. During the large-scale distribution event in April, 92 percent of beneficiaries successfully accessed their PDS rice. Out of a total of 1.05 crore cards, approximately 97.24 lakh were utilized, with 41.57 lakh individuals taking advantage of the portability feature, resulting in over 2.93 crore transactions.
