Rise in Stem Cell Transplants Under Aarogyasri Scheme

Hyderabad, May 28: On World Blood Cancer Day, it is noteworthy that the number of stem cell transplant procedures supported by the Aarogyasri program in Telangana has seen a steady increase from 14 cases in the financial year 2020-21 to around 94 cases by 2024-25.
According to a report analyzing treatment trends between April 2020 and September 2025, allogeneic and autologous stem cell procedures have been the most expensive treatments under the Aarogyasri scheme. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation recorded an expenditure of ₹11 crore, while autologous transplantation cost ₹6.97 crore during this period.
Financial Expenditure and Claims Analysis
The report highlighted that follow-up and vaccination packages incurred comparatively lower costs. However, transplant procedures themselves required significant financial resources. Autologous stem cell transplantation registered the highest claims count with 173 cases, while allogeneic follow-up packages recorded 156 claims.
The expenditure on these treatments grew from ₹0.76 crore to ₹4.88 crore over the analyzed period, reflecting a significant increase in healthcare investment and patient access. The number of treated patients also saw an increase from just 14 cases in 2020-21 to nearly 94 cases by 2024-25.
