A heated debate has emerged in the Maharashtra Vidhan Parishad regarding a proposal to rename the historic King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai. The potential change has sparked significant friction between opposition members and the government, highlighting broader tensions over the renaming of colonial-era landmarks.
Controversial Proposal for KEM Hospital Renaming
The suggestion to rename the century-old medical institution to ‘Kaushalyashreshtha Eklavya Memorial Hospital’ was put forward by Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the state's skill development minister and guardian minister for Mumbai Suburban district. Lodha defended the initiative by sharply criticizing the legacy of King Edward VII, describing the monarch as a symbol of colonial exploitation who negatively impacted the nation.
In response, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Milind Narvekar strongly protested the move. Narvekar questioned the necessity of targeting the hospital’s established historical identity, asking whether the government intends to systematically alter the names of other prominent landmarks across the region. He called for direct intervention from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to address the matter.
Government Position and Administrative Hurdles
The KEM Hospital, situated in the Parel area, has served the community since its inauguration in 1926. Currently managed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the hospital functions as a major healthcare hub, employing hundreds of physicians and providing medical care to millions of patients annually. The potential renaming raises complex administrative concerns, as thousands of academic and professional degrees have been issued under the institution’s current name.
Addressing these concerns, Industries Minister Uday Samant provided assurance that no hasty decisions would be made. Samant emphasized that the administration would thoroughly verify all legal, historical, and practical implications before proceeding. He maintained that the government’s priority is to remain responsive to the wishes of Mumbaikars and ensure that all logistical consequences, including the status of past certifications, are fully evaluated. While the BMC Health Committee has reportedly signaled approval for the transition, the state government appears committed to a measured approach regarding the future of the KEM Hospital identity.
