Maharashtra: Man-Eater Tigress T 27 Captured in Gondia District After Attacks

A significant development has emerged from the Nawegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve in the Gondia district of Maharashtra. After an extensive two-month search, forest authorities successfully captured a man-eater tigress, officially identified as T 27, on Sunday. This animal had been a source of growing alarm for local residents living within the buffer zone of the protected forest area.

The man-eater tigress had been linked to a series of tragic encounters earlier this year. Between March 19 and April 24, the feline was responsible for the deaths of two individuals—a man and a woman—and had also caused injuries to two other people. These incidents created a climate of fear among villagers, prompting an urgent need for intervention by the state's forest department to ensure public safety and mitigate further human-wildlife conflict.

Understanding the Capture of Tigress T 27

According to reports from forest officials, the behavior of T 27 was likely influenced by a physical ailment. It was observed that the big cat had sustained an injury to one of its front legs. This impairment hindered its ability to hunt natural prey effectively, which ultimately compelled the man-eater tigress to venture into human-populated settlements in search of easier targets. The tracking collar attached to the animal played a crucial role in helping authorities monitor its movements during the search operation.

The operation concluded when the animal was located and safely tranquilized within a sugarcane field situated in Amgaon Burjuk, located in the Sakoli tehsil. Following the successful capture, the forest department took immediate steps to transport the animal for medical evaluation and rehabilitation. The man-eater tigress was relocated to the Transit Treatment Centre (TTC) located at Gorewada in Nagpur.

The transition of the animal to the Gorewada facility is intended to provide it with specialized care and assessment. Experts at the Transit Treatment Centre will monitor the condition of the injured leg and determine the best course of action regarding the future of the animal. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by wildlife management teams in Maharashtra as they work to balance the conservation of endangered species with the critical necessity of protecting human communities residing near forest boundaries.

Local authorities have expressed relief following the successful capture, as the presence of a predator known to attack humans had severely restricted the daily activities of the villagers in the region. The state administration remains committed to maintaining a close watch on wildlife corridors to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
