A tragic incident has occurred in the Angul district of Odisha, where a 25-year-old individual lost his life while allegedly attempting to evade law enforcement. The deceased, identified as Rajesh Gochhayat, a resident of Kadalipali village, reportedly drowned in the Brahmani River during a police operation targeting illegal gambling activities.

The incident unfolded on a Wednesday evening when a Special Squad initiated a raid near the riverbank in Kadalipali village, acting on specific intelligence regarding a gambling hub. As the authorities moved in to secure the location, several individuals present at the site attempted to flee the scene to avoid arrest. This desperate scramble for safety led to a hazardous situation near the river.

Investigation into the Fatal Police Raid Incident

Reports indicate that three individuals jumped into the Brahmani River in an effort to escape the approaching law enforcement officers. While two of these persons successfully reached the opposite bank and swam to safety, Rajesh Gochhayat was unfortunately overwhelmed by the strong currents of the river. The tragic outcome sparked immediate concern among local residents who have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the subsequent drowning.

Following the event, local community members and police personnel collaborated to conduct an extensive search operation along the river. The body of the youth was eventually located and recovered from the water. The police have maintained that a thorough investigation into the events that led to this fatality is currently underway.

During the course of the law enforcement raid, authorities seized a substantial amount of equipment and assets suspected of being tied to the illicit gambling operation. The items recovered from the scene include two auto-rickshaws, two cars, a Bolero utility vehicle, and eight motorcycles. Additionally, officers confiscated cash totaling Rs 35,000.

In total, 13 individuals were detained by the Rengali police for questioning regarding their involvement in the gambling activities. As of late Thursday, these individuals remained in police custody. While the incident has drawn significant local attention, both the police department and the family of the deceased had refrained from issuing detailed official statements regarding the specific sequence of events leading to the drowning as of the time of this report.
