Israel Intensifies Strikes in Lebanon - Netanyahu Orders Escalation Amid Ongoing Conflict
The Israeli army has intensified strikes in southern Lebanon following a statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordering an acceleration of military operations. This move follows the United States and Iran's ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the Middle East conflict, which includes the Lebanese-Lebanese Israel front where hostilities have been ongoing since March 2.
The strikes were initiated with dozens of airstrikes on several towns and villages in southern Lebanon during early hours on Monday. These attacks killed three people in two cars and one motorcycle, as reported by Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA). In response to the ceasefire violation, Israel also issued evacuation orders for 10 villages near the ancient city of Tyre.
Following this escalation, an AFP correspondent observed residents fleeing Beirut's southern suburbs. The Israeli air force launched successive strikes in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley on Monday evening, targeting multiple towns and potentially escalating tensions further.
Netanyahu's Call for Escalation
Netanyahu's statement called for 'an even greater acceleration of our operations,' reflecting Iran-backed Hezbollah's ongoing drone attacks. Netanyahu asserted, "There is an urgent need to put an end to the threat posed by Hezbollah's explosive drones," emphasizing that "for every explosive drone strike, 10 buildings must fall in Beirut."
Hezbollah has consistently launched drone strikes against Israeli forces within Lebanese borders and across the border. Following Monday's escalation, the group announced it had targeted three barracks and a military post in northern Israel as a response to what it termed as 'the violation of the ceasefire' by Israel.
The Israeli military reported that since early March, their strikes have killed more than 3,100 people, including 23 soldiers. One civilian contractor was also killed during this time.
Call for Further Military Expansion
The escalation has drawn backing from two far-right Israeli ministers who urged an expansion of the military campaign into Lebanon. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated, "There is an urgent need to put an end to the threat posed by Hezbollah's explosive drones," while National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir advocated for a 'return to intensive warfare.'
The Israeli army currently controls a 10-kilometer deep strip of land in southern Lebanon and has set the Litani River as the boundary for clearing out Hezbollah fighters. Despite mounting tensions, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reiterated his position on non-negotiable full withdrawal from the area.
Lebanon and Israel are holding negotiations and will meet at the Pentagon to discuss their boundaries; a crucial round of talks is scheduled in Washington on June 2-3.
This escalation marks an intensification of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon after a ceasefire, highlighting ongoing tensions despite diplomatic efforts by external actors like the United States and Iran. The situation poses significant risks to regional stability with multiple high-ranking officials advocating for continued or even intensified military action.
