Highlights

  • India's first hydrogen-powered train approved for operation on Jind-Sonipat route
  • Top speed of 75 kmph with 1,200 kW power output using distributed power rolling stock technology
  • Ongoing safety audits and compliance procedures to ensure operational readiness
  • Training programs for staff involved in refueling operations and onboard crew

India has made significant strides towards a greener future with the deployment of its first hydrogen-powered train. The Ministry of Railways has approved the operation of India's first 10-coach DEMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) train that will run on the Jind-Sonipat route within the Northern Railway zone, traveling at a top speed of 75 kilometers per hour.

This train is powered by hydrogen fuel cells, harnessing clean energy to contribute towards reducing carbon emissions. The total power output of the train stands at 1,200 kilowatts, and it utilizes Distributed Power Rolling Stock (DPRS) technology to ensure a smooth ride for passengers and efficient operation.

Technical Approval & Compliance

The project received technical approval from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). A safety audit by the Commissioner of Railway Safety confirmed that the train is ready to operate. However, before full-scale commercial operations can commence, several compliance procedures and verification steps need completion.

According to reports, these steps include submitting all necessary compliance reports to the General Manager of Northern Railway for review. Other statutory authorities like the RDSO, CCRS, and Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) will also verify and approve the train's operation.

PESP O has authorized the refueling of compressed hydrogen gas at Jind, ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is in place to support this innovative initiative.

Training & Safety

To ensure the safe and efficient operation of the train, Northern Railway will conduct comprehensive training for personnel assigned critical roles. This includes staff responsible for hydrogen refueling operations as well as onboard crew members who will operate the equipment and provide passenger information.

The train's operation is currently limited to the Jind-Sonipat section, where it will undergo maintenance at Shakur Basti in Delhi. During this maintenance period, the train will be towed by a diesel-powered locomotive for servicing. Technical staff will accompany the train during its initial three months of operations to address any arising issues.

The deployment of this hydrogen-powered train is significant as India joins an exclusive group of countries including Germany, Japan, Sweden, and China that operate such trains. This marks a crucial step in the country's transition towards cleaner transportation options, aligning with its broader goals for sustainable growth.
