Congress Sweeps All Five Contested Seats in Karnataka Legislative Council Elections

The recent Karnataka Legislative Council elections held in Bengaluru have concluded with the ruling Congress party securing all five seats it contested. The results, announced following the secret ballot voting at Vidhana Soudha, indicate a notable shift in political dynamics within the state, as the victory of the fifth nominee appears to have been facilitated by cross-voting from opposition BJP and JDS legislators.

Analysis of Legislative Council Election Results

The polls were conducted to fill seven vacant seats in the upper house, with 222 out of 224 total legislators casting their ballots. While the Congress party maintained a strong position in the assembly with 135 members and additional support from independents, the success of their fifth candidate, Vinay Karthik, remained a focal point of the results. Vinay Karthik himself acknowledged the unexpected support, noting that he secured 32 votes, exceeding his initial expectation of 28.

The Bharatiya Janata Party successfully won two of the seats it pursued in the Karnataka Legislative Council, while the JDS, despite an alliance with the BJP, failed to secure the single seat it contested. Following the declaration of results, the leader of the opposition in the assembly, R. Ashok, expressed concerns regarding the internal integrity of his party, confirming reports of at least three instances of cross-voting. He indicated that the BJP would investigate these occurrences to determine the identities of the dissenting members and consider appropriate disciplinary actions.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar commented on the development, emphasizing that the nature of secret ballot voting makes it impossible to definitively identify individual voters. He noted that the opposition members might have exercised their personal conscience when casting their ballots for the Congress candidates. Furthermore, Randeep Singh Surjewala, the Congress party in-charge for Karnataka, reported that their nominees collectively received 151 first-preference votes.

Breakdown of Voting Figures

The final tallies showcased strong support for the ruling party's candidates. B.K. Hariprasad, Thippanna Kamaknoor, and B.S. Shivanna each secured 30 votes, while P.V. Mohan received 29 votes. The BJP candidates, R. Raghu and Lingaraj Patil, obtained 29 and 27 votes, respectively. The lone JDS candidate, Govindaraju, finished with 14 votes. The vacancies arose due to the disqualification of Vinay Kulkarni following a conviction and the passing of D. Sudhakar, who served as the Minister of Planning and Statistics.
