Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is spearheading an ambitious strategic initiative to transform Amaravati into a sprawling Amaravati Mega Economic Region. This visionary project aims to position the capital of Andhra Pradesh as a primary engine for state-wide economic growth, with a long-term goal of fostering significant prosperity by 2047.

To initiate this development, the administration has authorized a Request For Proposal (RFP) to create a comprehensive development roadmap. This Amaravati Mega Economic Region will span 44,962 square kilometers, encompassing nine districts: West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Palnadu, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Markapuram. The Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) is currently inviting tenders to move the project forward.

Driving Economic Prosperity and Infrastructure Growth

The core objective is to evolve Amaravati into a major investment hub, characterized by iconic architecture and high-rise developments. Under the broader Swarna Andhra Vision-2047 and aligned with the NITI Aayog’s City Economic Region framework, the government aims to elevate this region into a $250-billion economy. Currently, this area contributes approximately 35.15 percent to the state’s Gross State Domestic Product.

The structural plan designates Amaravati as the anchor city. Meanwhile, Vijayawada and Guntur are slated to become service and industrial twin cities, while Eluru and Bapatla will focus on agro-industrial development. Furthermore, Ongole and Markapuram are earmarked as key manufacturing and mineral corridors, complemented by port-led industrial clusters around Machilipatnam, Ramayapatnam, Krishnapatnam, and Kakinada.

Technical and financial support for this massive endeavor is being provided by the Asian Development Bank, with Singapore also actively partnering in the strategic planning process. Development models from regions like Greater Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore are being evaluated to establish a phased implementation strategy. The government plans to identify 10 to 12 major growth drivers and initiate at least eight flagship projects to attract global private investors and institutional funding.

Key sectors identified for this transformation include electronics, drones, semiconductor design, electric vehicle (EV) components, pharmaceuticals, textiles, defense, aerospace, and Global Capability Centres. The strategy heavily relies on leveraging major connectivity corridors, including the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway, the proposed Amaravati-Anantapur Expressway, and the Vijayawada-Hyderabad corridor. Implementation will occur in phases over the next 22 years, with specific milestones established for 2030, 2035, and 2047, all monitored via a specialized digital dashboard.
