Residents in Vijayawada are set to receive much-needed relief as the foundation stone for the new Gunadala ROB (Road Over Bridge) is scheduled to be laid this coming Monday. The project aims to address long-standing traffic issues faced by commuters traveling between the busy hubs of Gunadala and Nunna, providing a modern infrastructure solution to a chronic bottleneck.
The construction of this Gunadala ROB is a significant infrastructure development, valued at Rs. 98.68 crore. The initiative was officially sanctioned on March 30, 2026, and approved under the 2024-25 budget cycle. By replacing the existing Level Crossing Gate No. 316, the project is designed to eliminate the daily congestion that plagues thousands of motorists. Currently, the railway gate handles approximately 170 train movements every day, often remaining closed for up to 16 hours, leading to massive traffic build-ups and lengthy wait times for locals.
Infrastructure Details and Project Scope
The new Gunadala ROB will span a total length of 920 metres. The engineering design includes a 576-metre viaduct, 305 metres of road formation, and 18 distinct spans to ensure structural integrity and efficiency. To accommodate heavy traffic flow, the bridge will feature a 7.5-metre-wide carriageway, complemented by 5.5-metre-wide service roads on both sides. Additionally, the construction will incorporate modern drainage systems and safety crash barriers, resulting in an overall width of approximately 24 metres.
This massive undertaking involves building the bridge at an elevation of 10 metres above the active railway tracks. Currently, authorities are in the process of securing 5.77 acres of government land required for the site. With the backing of the Indian Railways, the project is slated for completion within a timeframe of 18 months, representing a concerted effort to modernize transport connectivity in the region.
Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), the MP for Vijayawada, has been instrumental in spearheading this initiative. Through persistent coordination with the Union Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and other high-level railway officials, the MP has worked to ensure the project moves from the planning phase to active implementation. Upon completion, the Gunadala ROB is expected to drastically improve local road safety, slash travel times for commuters, and significantly enhance the daily traffic management within the city, providing a permanent resolution to the delays currently experienced at the level crossing.
