US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to Visit India Amid Trade Deal Push

As international diplomatic efforts continue to intensify, the United States is moving closer to finalising a pivotal India-US bilateral trade agreement. This development was a central theme during a recent high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, held on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.

Following the discussions, official reports from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) indicated that both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved thus far. The heads of state have directed their respective teams to expedite the negotiation process, aiming to secure a comprehensive, balanced, and mutually beneficial economic framework as soon as possible.

Upcoming Diplomatic Engagements

In a direct step toward advancing these negotiations, the US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, is scheduled to visit India in the coming week. Commerce officials have confirmed that Greer’s upcoming agenda is heavily focused on solidifying the framework for an interim trade deal. It is anticipated that from June 23 to June 24, he will hold intensive consultations with the Indian Minister for Commerce and Industry to address key points of contention and refine the proposed terms.

The significance of this India-US bilateral trade agreement extends beyond immediate commercial gains. The deal is expected to resolve complex issues, including ongoing investigations related to Section 301 trade measures. By addressing the broader spectrum of the trade relationship, both nations hope to establish a more stable economic environment for future collaboration.

Expanding Strategic Partnerships

Beyond the immediate focus on trade, the leaders used the platform of the G7 Summit to review the broader India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. A critical component of this review was the COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology) initiative. Launched in early 2025, this initiative has become a cornerstone of the bilateral agenda.

Both Prime Minister Modi and President Trump acknowledged the positive momentum observed in energy cooperation, defence technology, and strategic development. The commitment to these initiatives underscores a shared goal of enhancing economic and security ties between the two global powers.
