The state government in Telangana has announced a significant expansion of disability welfare measures aimed at enhancing support for citizens with special needs. As part of these new initiatives, the administration plans to introduce Intermediate-level classes within special educational institutions located in Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, and Miryalaguda. This move is intended to provide better academic accessibility for students with disabilities across these regions.
The state's Welfare Minister, Adluri Lakshman Kumar, detailed these developments during the 146th birth anniversary celebrations of Helen Keller in Hyderabad. During the event, the minister emphasized that individuals with disabilities should be viewed as integral, equal participants in the development of Telangana, rather than just recipients of welfare assistance. He urged a shift in perspective, focusing on providing meaningful opportunities rather than mere sympathy.
Strengthening Disability Welfare Measures Across Telangana
The government is currently evaluating a proposal to increase the monthly disability pension from the existing ₹4,000 to ₹6,000. Additionally, plans are underway to establish an Advisory Board for Persons with Disabilities to ensure more structured advocacy and policy implementation. These disability welfare measures are part of a broader commitment to improve the quality of life for the differently-abled population in the state.
Other key updates shared by the minister include the doubling of marriage assistance from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh. Over the past two-and-a-half years, the government has successfully distributed scooters, electric mobility vehicles, and various assistive devices to nearly 2,000 beneficiaries across all 33 districts. Furthermore, employees with disabilities are now benefiting from GO 34, which allows them to request transfers to preferred locations, enhancing their professional and personal convenience.
Recognizing the efforts of students, Adluri Lakshman Kumar distributed laptops, mobile phones, and essential assistive tools to high-achieving pupils from SSC, intermediate, and degree levels. He also announced that a statue honoring the late disability rights activist Javed Abidi will be installed on the department premises as a tribute to his contributions. The minister reiterated that the department is dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by the community, emphasizing that their welfare remains a primary responsibility of the government.
Beyond academic support, the administration is prioritizing the inclusion of persons with disabilities in various state-run projects, including the Indiramma Housing Scheme. By ensuring that teachers in special schools receive timely salaries and by fostering an environment of equal opportunity, the Telangana government aims to build a more inclusive society where every individual is empowered to contribute to the state's progress.
