Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has initiated a significant financial boost for residents affected by the Veligonda project. On Saturday, in a move to support displaced families, the Chief Minister disbursed Rs 300 crore, providing necessary relief to 2,351 families who had to vacate their lands for the landmark infrastructure development.

Addressing the beneficiaries in Yerragondapalem, N Chandrababu Naidu emphasized the state's commitment to rehabilitating those impacted by the Veligonda project. These individuals, hailing from various localities including Kalanutala, Sunkesula, Chintalamudipi, Katamraju Tanda, and Sairam Nagar, are set to benefit directly from these critical resettlement funds. The government’s effort aims to alleviate the challenges faced by these families, who made substantial personal sacrifices for the greater regional good.

Impact of the Veligonda Project on Irrigation and Water Supply

The Veligonda project is projected to be a transformative initiative for the irrigation and water security landscape in the region. N Chandrababu Naidu highlighted that the project, once fully operational, will cover four districts: Markapuram, Prakasam, Nellore, and Kadapa. By addressing the water needs of 30 mandals, the development is expected to provide a lasting resolution to long-standing fluoride issues affecting local communities.

The project is being rolled out in phases to ensure systematic water distribution. The initial phase is scheduled to begin water supply by July 31, promising irrigation for 1.19 lakh acres and drinking water access for approximately four lakh residents. A second phase, following the completion of the first, is set to expand the reach, benefiting an additional 3.2 lakh acres and providing water to over 11.2 lakh people.

Regarding the financial management of the Veligonda project, the government reported that the total estimated expenditure is Rs 10,580 crore. To date, Rs 6,736 crore has been utilized, with an outstanding balance of Rs 3,844 crore yet to be spent. Since the current administration took charge in 2024, the government has prioritized support for the displaced, dedicating Rs 759 crore and specifically sanctioning Rs 905 crore for the evacuees, a portion of which includes the latest Rs 300 crore disbursement.

During his address, the Chief Minister also commented on the state’s fiscal status, expressing concern over the management of finances by the previous administration. Despite these challenges, the current government remains focused on completing the irrigation infrastructure as a top priority. For the agricultural community, the project represents a major step toward long-term water stability and enhanced livelihoods, potentially turning vast tracts of land into fertile, productive areas for farmers across the four affected districts.
