Hyderabad: In a significant move towards recognizing and protecting the interests of platform-based gig workers, Forum For Progressive Gig Workers in India has urged the Government of Telangana to adopt a balanced regulatory framework for the upcoming Telangana Platform-Based Gig Workers Bill, 2026. The forum emphasizes that while social security is crucial, overly prescriptive regulations could stifle the flexibility and scalability essential for the gig economy.

Key recommendations made included:
- Preserving the distinction between gig work and traditional employment relationships as defined under the Code on Social Security, 2020.
- Maintaining practical compliance obligations that are suited to platform-based work.
- Avoiding unnecessary regulatory mechanisms already covered by existing laws and institutional frameworks.
- Creating a contributing framework for worker welfare that aligns with central legislation.
The recommendations also underscore the importance of continuing investment, innovation, and providing earning opportunities across Telangana's digital economy ecosystem. Narsimhan specifically warned against provisions resembling traditional employment structures, such as fixed remuneration or operational restrictions, which could create legal uncertainties and affect service efficiency.
Moreover, the forum urged for broader stakeholder consultations before finalizing any regulations to ensure a practical implementation that supports long-term economic growth and job creation. This calls for a modern and flexible framework tailored to the evolving nature of platform work.
