KEY TAKEAWAYS
1 MIN READ- The Supreme Court has deferred the urgent hearing regarding Ayodhya Temple donation allegations until after the summer break.
- The plea seeks a CBI-led special investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
- Petitioners argue that an independent investigation is required to maintain the trust of devotees and the general public.
- The Uttar Pradesh government had previously formed an SIT to look into the matter without registering an FIR.
The Supreme Court of India has declined a request for an urgent hearing regarding allegations of financial irregularities and fund embezzlement within the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. This legal challenge, which demands a thorough investigation into the management of donations for the Ayodhya Temple, will now be deferred until after the court's summer recess.
A judicial bench consisting of Justices M M Sundresh and Sheel Nagu presided over the matter on Monday. In response to the petitioners' plea for immediate intervention, the bench orally remarked that the situation did not warrant such expedited judicial action, stating, "Heavens are not going to fall… What is the urgency?"
Legal Battle Over Ram Temple Donation Row
The petition was filed by advocates Ajay Kumar Rai and Dinesh Kumar Yadav. Their legal submission calls for a formal investigation conducted by a multi-disciplinary Special Investigation Team (SIT), specifically led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The primary objective is to conduct a transparent probe into reported financial discrepancies linked to the administration of the Ayodhya Temple trust. The plea also requests that the central and Uttar Pradesh state governments establish rigorous audit, supervisory, and regulatory frameworks to bolster public trust and ensure the transparent management of future contributions.
The petitioners emphasized the significant public concern surrounding the Ayodhya Temple project. "Whether or not the reports regarding missing funds and other alleged irregularities concerning the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust are ultimately found to be true, such reports have caused deep concern among the generations that struggled for the restoration of the glory of Ayodhya," the legal document stated.
Furthermore, the plea challenges the existing preliminary inquiry being conducted by the Uttar Pradesh government. It alleges that the current SIT, which includes Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, IGP Kiran S, and Finance Department Special Secretary Neel Ratan, has begun its work without the registration of an FIR or the formal initiation of a criminal case. The advocates argued that an independent, professional investigation by a unified agency would carry more institutional weight and foster greater public confidence than a probe limited to administrative officers who might lack specialized expertise in complex financial crimes.
As the legal community and the public await the resumption of hearings following the summer break, the debate remains centered on the necessity for a professional investigation into the Ram Temple donation administration. The outcome of these future proceedings will be critical in addressing the concerns raised by the petitioners regarding the management of public funds donated for the temple.
