Security forces have successfully executed a significant operation in the dense forests of Malkangiri, Odisha, uncovering a large cache of arms and ammunition. This discovery represents a critical blow to the extremist infrastructure in the region, as authorities continue to clear out hidden stockpiles left behind by Maoist elements. The Maoist arms cache was identified during a targeted search effort conducted by the District Voluntary Force (DVF) within the Guntabeda and Kadamguda forest sectors, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Kalimela police.
The mission was launched following precise intelligence reports and corroborated by information disclosed during the rigorous interrogation of surrendered insurgents. This strategic recovery highlights the ongoing efforts of state security agencies to completely neutralize the influence of Left-wing extremism in Odisha. The seized items included two Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs), two locally manufactured pistols, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), a Claymore mine, and various under-barrel grenade launchers. Furthermore, security personnel discovered grenades and 37 different types of explosive components, along with materials specifically used for the assembly of weaponry.
Operations to Eliminate Hidden Maoist Arms Cache
According to the Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinodh Patil H, this finding is the third major arms dump unearthed within the district during the month of June alone. The official noted that previous recoveries were successfully completed on June 9 and June 15. The authorities are actively using intelligence gained from former cadres to locate other buried supplies, ensuring that any remaining infrastructure is systematically dismantled. The persistent search operations reflect the firm stance of the police department to prevent any resurgence of extremist activities in these remote forest areas.
Although Malkangiri had previously been declared free of Maoist influence by a March 31 deadline, the continued recovery of these weapons suggests that remnants of the insurgent network had long-term intentions for these buried materials. The DVF team has been lauded for their diligence in locating these dangerous assets. Patil confirmed that security personnel would maintain a heightened state of alertness and continue their search missions in the coming days. The goal of these intensive efforts remains the complete elimination of any potential threats, thereby securing the safety and stability of the local communities and preventing extremist groups from regaining a foothold in the region.
