Rs 65,000-Crore JSW Steel Project in Odisha to Boost Regional Economy

Highlights

  • Rs 65,000-Crore JSW Utkal Integrated Steel Project in Jagatsinghpur district
  • Expected to generate over 32,000 direct and indirect jobs
  • Combined with plans for a cement factory with a capacity of 12 million tonnes
  • Strategic Gateway for Eastern Asia due to its coastal location

Odisha has taken a significant step towards fortifying its industrial corridor with the laying of the foundation stone for the Rs 65,000-crore JSW Utkal integrated steel project. Located in Jagatsinghpur district at Dhinkia, this mega development is set to transform regional employment and economic prospects considerably.

The Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, led the foundation ceremony, expressing confidence that it would turn Odisha into a major steel hub. "With this JSW project in Paradip, Odisha is poised to become a leading steel-producing state." The plant's expected employment generation of over 32,000 direct and indirect jobs underscores its impact. Additionally, plans are underway for a cement factory with a capacity of 12 million tonnes.

JSW Steel intends to establish a captive power plant along with supporting infrastructure like a jetty facility. This substantial investment is scheduled for operationalization by 2029 and is seen as one of the largest industrial ventures in eastern India.

Strategic Implications

The project aims to boost economic activity across sectors, including logistics, transportation, engineering services, and small-scale manufacturing. By removing administrative bottlenecks that previously delayed the project, the current BJP government has expedited its implementation.

Achieving industrialization aggressively since assuming office in 2024, the state government's efforts are expected to revive investor confidence in Odisha, particularly concerning large-scale industrial projects. The region's mineral-rich coastal area—known for its proximity to ports and raw material reserves—has historically attracted global steel and infrastructure companies.

The project also positions Odisha as a critical manufacturing gateway for eastern and southeastern Asia, driving regional integration and economic growth.
