Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has firmly declared that the push for the restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir remains the administration's top priority. Following a recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Abdullah clarified that there has been absolutely no change in the government’s strategic roadmap regarding this critical demand.
During a recent event in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah confirmed that legislators from the National Conference (NC) are gearing up for the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. The party intends to reiterate its appeal for statehood, reminding the central leadership of previous commitments made in various public forums and within the Supreme Court. To amplify the public’s voice on this matter, the party also plans to organize a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
Advocating for Democratic Governance and Statehood
The Chief Minister emphasized that the campaign for statehood is deeply rooted in widespread public sentiment rather than being solely a political maneuver. He argued that the restoration of full democratic status is essential to improve governance and ensure greater accountability within Jammu and Kashmir. According to Abdullah, his recent discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was both constructive and broad, covering financial stability, the need to expedite critical development projects, and the overall administrative health of the region.
To build a stronger political consensus, the Chief Minister has invited members of the INDIA bloc to join the proposed protest rally. While the National Conference has faced criticism from various opposition factions regarding its governance, Abdullah and his party supporters maintain that these challenges only highlight the urgent necessity of restoring a fully functional elected government. They believe that clear governance structures are vital to rebuild public trust and ensure effective service delivery to the citizens.
Regarding other pressing matters, Omar Abdullah provided updates on the regional reservation policy. The proposal is currently undergoing final reviews after the Centre requested further clarifications. The government expects to place the updated report before the Cabinet for final approval shortly. Additionally, the administration is overseeing comprehensive preparations for the upcoming Muharram observances and the annual Amarnath Yatra. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of inter-departmental coordination to ensure that these significant religious events proceed peacefully and safely for all participants.
