Nalgonda Minister Calls for Coordinated Godavari Flood Preparedness and Safety Measures
Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has directed officials in Nalgonda and Kothagudem to ensure inter-departmental coordination for flood preparedness. The strategy focuses on using modern technology, maintaining essential services, and prioritizing sanitation and medical readiness to protect residents in vulnerable areas along the Godavari River during the monsoon.

With the monsoon season approaching, authorities in Nalgonda are ramping up efforts to manage potential risks. Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has issued strict directives to local officials, emphasizing the necessity of a coordinated response to handle any potential flooding along the Godavari River. During a high-level review meeting held at the Integrated District Collectorate Complex in Kothagudem, the Minister underscored the importance of proactive disaster management to safeguard both lives and property.
Despite recent reports of rainfall deficits attributed to the El Niño weather phenomenon, the Minister warned that officials must not lower their guard. There remains a significant possibility of heavy downpours, which could lead to critical situations in specific regions. Consequently, he has instructed all departments to maintain a state of high vigilance and to utilize modern technology to improve risk mitigation strategies and disaster response efficiency.
Preparedness Strategies and Infrastructure Maintenance
To ensure robust flood preparedness, the Minister mandated several specific actions. The irrigation department has been tasked with keeping all pumping systems fully operational to prevent floodwaters from inundating Bhadrachalam town. Furthermore, officials must ensure that rainwater is drained efficiently into the river system. Regarding healthcare, the Minister ordered the medical department to remain prepared with sufficient stocks of essential medicines. He also highlighted the need for intensified sanitation drives in agency areas, a critical step to prevent the outbreak of diseases that often follow flood events.
District Collector Ankit confirmed that a comprehensive framework for flood preparedness is already in motion. This includes the activation of a District Emergency Operations Centre, supplemented by additional centers at the mandal level within various tahsildar offices. Authorities have proactively identified and prepared rehabilitation shelters in flood-prone areas, ensuring they are equipped with necessary provisions such as clean drinking water, electricity, proper sanitation, and medical support.
The review meeting also touched upon long-term agricultural and structural stability. Tummala Nageswara Rao urged officials to raise awareness among tribal farmers regarding the cultivation of horticulture crops and the scientific application of fertilizers, particularly urea. Infrastructure projects, including embankment works along the Bhadrachalam–Kunavaram road, are under close observation. Specifically, Burgampadu and Ashwapuram have been flagged as highly vulnerable regions requiring extra attention. The meeting, which saw the participation of key officials including Superintendent of Police Rohit Raju, various local MLAs, and the Kothagudem Municipal Corporation Mayor, signaled a unified commitment to inter-departmental cooperation before the onset of heavy monsoon rains.
