A high-ranking delegation from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is set to visit Jammu and Kashmir on June 20 and 21. This visit is intended to conduct an exhaustive, on-the-ground assessment of the security framework and logistical arrangements for the forthcoming annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Led by the Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, the team will include top officials from various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and intelligence branches. This critical review comes as preparations for the 57-day pilgrimage, scheduled from July 3 to August 28, reach their final stages. The official visit is slated to feature separate high-level meetings in Jammu on June 20 and Srinagar on June 21, involving key members of the local administration, police, and security agencies.
Strengthening Security for the Amarnath Yatra
The MHA delegation will conduct a comprehensive audit of the multi-layered Amarnath Yatra security grid. This strategy extends from Lakhanpur, the entry point of the region, all the way to the holy cave shrine. Particular focus will be placed on vital infrastructure such as the Pathankot-Jammu and Jammu-Srinagar National Highways, as well as transit points like airports, railway stations, and base camps.
This initiative follows a high-level directive provided by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 12, who emphasized the necessity of meticulous planning. Current reports suggest that approximately 90 percent of the planned security deployment, which includes 670 companies of paramilitary forces, has already been executed. The deployment is strategically spread across both the traditional Pahalgam route and the Baltal route to ensure the safety of all devotees.
Beyond standard security measures, the team will examine the effectiveness of route domination, surveillance systems, and emergency response capabilities. The authorities remain committed to ensuring that these heightened Amarnath Yatra security measures operate seamlessly without hindering the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the region.
Logistical Preparedness and Infrastructure
In addition to safety, the visiting officials are tasked with reviewing critical support systems required for a smooth pilgrimage. This includes an assessment of transportation, medical facilities, sanitation, communication networks, and disaster management protocols. As the event coincides with the Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan festivals, officials are anticipating a significant influx of pilgrims.
With the holy cave shrine located at an altitude of roughly 3,888 meters, the administration is focusing on strengthening infrastructure at halting points, base camps, and lodging facilities to accommodate the expected turnout. The government’s goal is to ensure robust coordination between civil departments, the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), and security agencies, aiming to provide a safe and serene experience for every devotee undertaking this sacred journey.
