The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, has achieved a historic financial milestone, recording a staggering revenue of Rs 142 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. As one of the revered 12 Jyotirlingas, the shrine has seen an unprecedented surge in its total annual income, marking a significant period of growth for the sacred site. The official report from the Mahakal Temple Committee highlights that this record-breaking financial success underscores the massive influx of devotees visiting the temple.

Record Donations Fuel Financial Growth at Mahakaleshwar Shrine

A primary driver of this financial achievement is the contribution from devotees, which reached an all-time high of Rs 78 crore during the 2025-26 period. This figure reflects a notable increase of Rs 27 crore compared to the previous fiscal year. Donations are collected through various channels, including 95 traditional 'Hundis' (donation boxes) which accounted for Rs 62 crore, alongside contributions via counters, online platforms, money orders, and secret donations amounting to Rs 4.65 crore. Beyond monetary gifts, the temple also received substantial offerings in the form of gold and silver jewelry.

The sale of 'laddu' prasad served as another significant revenue stream, contributing Rs 65 crore to the overall total. The financial vitality of the Mahakaleshwar Temple is bolstered by these consistent offerings, which help support the operational requirements of the site, currently estimated at approximately Rs 5 crore per month.

Impact of the Mahakal Corridor on Pilgrim Footfalls

The remarkable rise in temple revenue is directly linked to the enhanced infrastructure surrounding the sacred site. Since the inauguration of the Mahakal Corridor in 2022, there has been a dramatic transformation in pilgrim activity. Prior to the development of this expansive corridor, the daily footfall at the temple averaged between 40,000 and 50,000 visitors. Following its public opening in October 2022, daily attendance has surged to roughly 1.50 lakh pilgrims.

The Mahakal Corridor, a project dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2022, has fundamentally changed the pilgrimage experience. By providing better facilities and a more organized environment for worshippers, the project has not only facilitated larger crowds but has also elevated the stature of Ujjain as a premier destination for religious tourism in India.
