A significant land acquisition controversy has emerged in Madhya Pradesh, centering on Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and his family. The issue has ignited a fierce political debate, with the opposition Congress party demanding both a judicial investigation and the immediate resignation of the Chief Minister based on moral grounds.
Allegations and Demands for Investigation
The state unit president of the Congress, Jitu Patwari, described the recent reports concerning land purchases as deeply unsettling. He emphasized that the position of Chief Minister carries significant dignity and responsibility, and such serious allegations against the head of the state threaten the integrity of the office. Patwari has officially requested an inquiry into the matter, specifically asking that it be conducted by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India.
The Congress leadership claims that these land acquisitions—reportedly involving individual purchases and those made through real estate firms associated with the family—appear strategically linked to regions slated for future road construction projects. Umang Singhar, the Congress Legislature Party leader, went as far as labeling the matter the Mohan Yadav Files, suggesting a high level of corruption that he argues could influence other members of the administration. Furthermore, Jairam Ramesh, a senior AICC general secretary, highlighted allegations that Yadav’s family and their companies acquired approximately 137 plots, spanning 168 acres in Ujjain, for an estimated value of Rs 45 crore.
Assets and Official Response
Public records from the 2023 Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh provide some context regarding the assets involved. In his official declaration, Mohan Yadav disclosed ownership of 17 acres of land, both inherited and purchased. Additionally, his wife was listed as owning at least 10.6 acres. The couple also shares a majority stake of over 73 percent in a real estate firm, Siddhi Vinayak Devcon Pvt Ltd, which reportedly holds 39.5 acres of land.
As of now, there has been no formal statement or official reaction from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the office of the Chief Minister regarding these specific accusations. While some anonymous party sources have noted that any potential response would come directly from the Chief Minister himself, the political pressure continues to mount as the opposition seeks transparency regarding the land acquisition controversy.
