Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan has launched a strong critique against the former Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, specifically focusing on the delayed implementation of welfare promises. During proceedings in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister characterized the previous administration’s electoral strategy as an unplanned approach, alleging that significant welfare measures were only introduced as the government's term neared its end.

Addressing the legislative chamber, Satheeshan emphasized that his own administration has prioritized the execution of election manifesto commitments immediately upon taking office. He contrasted this with the prior regime’s timing, noting that promises remained unfulfilled for nearly 120 months. He highlighted that his government’s first action involved facilitating free travel for women in KSRTC buses, demonstrating a direct commitment to manifesto pledges.

Reviewing Welfare Promises and Administrative Challenges

The Chief Minister further addressed concerns regarding the status of women and various frontline workers in the state. He disputed the previous government’s claims of being pro-women, citing the struggles of ASHA workers under the prior administration. According to Satheeshan, the previous government had faced criticism for its handling of these workers, whereas his cabinet moved to increase their honorarium by ₹3,000 shortly after assuming power.

Beyond welfare concerns, Satheeshan raised alarms about the state’s financial health. He accused the former LDF leadership of leaving behind substantial financial liabilities. Furthermore, he claimed that the previous administration had stalled essential administrative processes, such as the formation of the Pay Revision Commission and the disbursement of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) to employees.

The debate intensified following an adjournment motion brought forward by opposition legislator A.C. Moideen, who questioned the ongoing delays in distributing the Women’s Safety Pension. In response, Satheeshan argued that the scheme was rushed into existence just before the previous election cycle without proper structural planning. He stated that the current government is now compelled to conduct a thorough review of the program.

This review process is set to examine beneficiary eligibility and address various procedural inconsistencies that have surfaced. Satheeshan asserted that the government must carefully evaluate the existing framework to ensure transparency and effectiveness. He maintained that while the concerns raised by the opposition were being addressed through this administrative review, there was no necessity to disrupt the proceedings of the Assembly to hold a discussion on the matter at this time. The government remains committed to evaluating these policies to ensure they serve the public interest effectively moving forward.
