Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is spearheading a strategic initiative to overhaul the state's approach to coastal tourism investment. By championing the implementation of a single-window system, the administration aims to simplify the complex approval processes that have historically acted as barriers for entrepreneurs and developers. This push for coastal tourism investment is viewed as a vital step toward leveraging the state's expansive coastline for economic gain while maintaining environmental stewardship.
During a high-level meeting held at the Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar instructed government officials to conduct a comprehensive assessment of existing technical impediments. These challenges, often stemming from Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms and forest department regulations, are slated for review. The Chief Minister has mandated that a detailed report identifying both these bottlenecks and their potential resolutions be prepared within a 15 to 20-day timeframe. The state government also intends to host a Cabinet meeting directly within the coastal region to further prioritize these developments.
Boosting Regional Infrastructure and Economic Growth
The state is actively promoting the unique cultural, traditional, and heritage aspects of its coast to an international audience. Currently, 45 projects with an estimated total investment of Rs 718.63 crore have already received approval under the Karnataka Tourism Policy. These projects are projected to generate approximately 4,500 new jobs. By focusing on coastal tourism investment, the government aims to elevate this employment figure significantly, ensuring that economic benefits reach local communities.
The meeting also addressed concerns raised by stakeholders regarding project scalability. Rishab Shetty, a prominent actor and filmmaker, emphasized the importance of safeguarding regional folk arts and music. Shetty highlighted that enhancing infrastructure specifically for film production would offer substantial benefits to the film industries of Karnataka, Kerala, and Goa. Additionally, industry leaders present at the session urged the administration to prioritize the expansion of heli-tourism to improve accessibility.
Ultimately, the objective is to create a seamless environment for business growth. By offering targeted incentives—such as subsidies, interest concessions, and various fiscal supports—the government hopes to accelerate the development of special tourism zones.
