Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) in Andhra Pradesh are experiencing high demand for admissions. Driven by quality facilities and strong academic results, parents from economically weaker sections are actively competing for seats across the state's 352 residential schools.

High Demand for KGBV Seats Across Andhra Pradesh Residential Schools

Highlights

  • KGBVs in Andhra Pradesh are seeing record demand, with 352 schools offering 14,080 total seats.
  • Admissions prioritize orphans, school dropouts, and students from marginalized SC/ST communities.
  • Success is linked to strong Class X results and better residential and food facilities.
  • Districts like Kurnool and Nandyal have nearly reached full capacity for the academic session.

There has been a significant surge in demand for KGBV seats across Andhra Pradesh, as parents increasingly turn to these government-run residential institutions for their daughters' education. While many public schools often struggle to fill their classrooms, these residential facilities are witnessing long queues of hopeful parents seeking admission for their children.

Rising Popularity of KGBV Schools

The state operates a network of 352 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), which provide residential schooling starting from Class VI. Each institution maintains a capacity of 40 students, resulting in a total state-wide intake capacity of 14,080. The admission process is conducted through a multi-phase online system to ensure transparency.

According to official data, the first phase successfully filled 10,317 seats, with an additional 2,373 placements occurring in the second phase. Currently, authorities are managing the processing of 688 remaining applications. The growing preference for these schools is widely attributed to improved hostel amenities, the provision of quality meals, and consistently high academic standards, which are particularly attractive to families from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The success is evident in the record-breaking performance of students, with the Class X results from the previous 2025–26 academic year serving as a major confidence booster for parents. Educational observers note that the combination of disciplined environments and quality residential facilities distinguishes KGBV seats from typical elementary and high school offerings, making them highly sought after.

Admission Priorities and Regional Demand

The selection protocol prioritizes specific demographics, including orphans, semi-orphans, students from single-parent households, and those who have previously dropped out of formal education. Following these groups, applicants from SC and ST communities are given preference. Final approvals are handled by the state office in Vijayawada after a thorough document verification process.

Regional data highlights the varying demand across the state. Anantapur district, home to the largest number of these residential schools at 32, saw significant enrollment activity. Meanwhile, districts like Nandyal and Kurnool have reached nearly full capacity. Dr. N.B. Lokaraju, the project officer for Kurnool Samagra Shiksha, confirmed that demand has been exceptionally high this year, noting that most available spots are already occupied. While some regions like Srikakulam and Vizianagaram still report around 15 per cent vacancies, officials anticipate that competition for KGBV seats will continue to intensify in future academic cycles.
