The Indian government has made significant strides in enhancing the Public Distribution System (PDS) through its 'SARTHAK-PDS' initiative, aimed at supporting 800 million ration consumers. During a recent Union Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, crucial revisions were introduced to streamline and modernize India's vital food distribution mechanism.

SARTHAK-PDS Scheme: This scheme is estimated to cost approximately Rs 25,530 crore and introduces three key modifications. Firstly, state governments will receive financial aid of up to Rs 1,648 crore for facilitating the transportation of food grains from Food Corporation of India (FCI) warehouses to local ration shops.

The second modification involves a boost in commission for ration shop owners (dealers). With an ongoing push for increased earnings among dealers who have faced stagnant commissions for years, the government has finally decided to raise these commissions. This move is expected to enhance the overall efficiency of the system and provide much-needed financial support.

The third significant update involves leveraging technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to automate beneficiary registration and improve transparency in the ration distribution process. Financial aid will be used to fund these technological improvements, modernize the PDS framework, and ensure a more robust supply chain.

Additionally, during the Union Cabinet meeting, the government highlighted ongoing efforts to address pressing issues such as the current heat wave. The focus was on ensuring public safety and addressing health concerns through multidisciplinary approaches implemented by various ministries."
